Tracking Multi-Stop and LTL Loads Without Losing the Thread
Tracking a multi-stop or LTL load means tracking a sequence, not a truck. A truckload has one origin, one destination, and one ETA. A multi-stop run has three to eight appointments that each depend on the one before it, and an LTL shipment changes vehicles entirely at every terminal. “The truck is rolling” is not an answer when the same load can be early to stop two and an hour behind at stop five in the same instant.
The volume is not shrinking. LTL freight alone is projected to grow by USD 110.7 billion between 2025 and 2029, pushed by smaller and more frequent shipments. Why does ordinary tracking break on these loads?
Single-truckload tracking assumes one origin, one destination, one ETA. Multi-stop and LTL violate all three. On a multi-stop run, GPS tells you where the equipment is but not whether stop three got pushed because stop two ran long on the dock. On an LTL move the freight is not on one truck for the whole trip: it is picked up, consolidated at a terminal, line-hauled, broken apart, and loaded onto a delivery vehicle. Tracking the original tractor stops meaning anything the second the pallets leave it.
On a truckload, “where is the truck” is the whole question. On a multi-stop or LTL move, it is barely the first one.
Two different problems wearing the same label
A multi-stop load is one truck and one driver running a sequence where every appointment depends on the previous one. An LTL load is many handoffs across carriers and terminals where the freight changes vehicles. One asks you to track a sequence on a single asset; the other asks you to track an item across assets you do not control. Treat them the same and you lose the thread on whichever one you guessed wrong about.
How do you track a multi-stop run?
The mistake is tracking the truck instead of the stops. The truck is one dot; the commitment you made lives at each appointment.
- Lock the sequence and each window up front. Every stop needs an ordered position and a committed appointment. A run with vague “sometime Tuesday” stops cannot be tracked, because there is nothing to be late against.
- Track the ETA to the next stop, not the final one. A slip at stop two is invisible in a number that only describes stop six.
- Re-forecast downstream stops every time one resolves. When a driver clears a stop late, every appointment after it shifts. The thread breaks when you update the stop that just happened and forget the three that just moved with it.
- Flag the first stop that goes red, not the last. Waiting until the final delivery looks late means finding out hours after you could have rebooked a dock.
- Capture arrival and departure at each stop. Dwell at one receiver is what makes the next appointment slip, and per-stop timestamps are your detention proof.
How do you track an LTL load?
The reliable anchor on LTL is not GPS, it is the carrier’s status milestones: picked up, arrived at origin terminal, in transit, arrived at destination terminal, out for delivery, delivered. Each milestone is a checkpoint where the thread either holds or goes quiet. The skill is noticing when a load sits too long between two of them, because that gap is where an LTL move slips without anyone calling to tell you.
On an LTL load, the danger is never the milestone that fires. It is the silence between two milestones that should have been minutes apart and stretched into a day.
The terminal dwell trap
Most LTL delays happen on a dock, not on the road, while a shipment waits to be consolidated or line-hauled. If your visibility only updates when freight moves, a load can sit a full day at a terminal and still look “on track.” Watching dwell between milestones is what separates the broker who catches the slip from the one who explains it afterward.
